There are, bhikkhus, these five dangers of placing confidence in an individual. Which five? That person, bhikkhus, in which an individual has confidence, falls into such an offence that the Community suspends him. He thinks thus: 'This person who is dear and charming to us has been suspended by the Community'. He is full of distrust towards the bhikkhus. Being full of distrust towards the bhikkhus, he does not keep companionship with other fellow bhikkhus. Not keeping companionship with other bhikkhus, he doesn't hear the proper Dhamma. Not hearing the proper Dhamma, he falls away from the proper Dhamma. This, bhikkhus, is the first danger of placing confidence in an individual.

Puna caparaṃ, bhikkhave, yasmiṃ puggale puggalo abhippasanno hoti, so tathārūpaṃ āpattiṃ āpanno hoti yathārūpāya āpattiyā saṅgho ante nisīdāpeti. Tassa evaṃ hoti: ‘yo kho myāyaṃ puggalo piyo manāpo so saṅghena ante nisīdāpito’ti. Bhikkhūsu appasādabahulo hoti. Bhikkhūsu appasādabahulo samāno aññe bhikkhū na bhajati. Aññe bhikkhū abhajanto saddhammaṃ na suṇāti. Saddhammaṃ asuṇanto saddhammā parihāyati. Ayaṃ, bhikkhave, dutiyo ādīnavo puggalappasāde.

Furthermore, bhikkhus, that person in which an individual has confidence falls into such an offence that the Community makes him sit on the last seat. He thinks thus: 'This person who is dear and charming to us, the Community makes him sit on the last seat'. This, bhikkhus, is the second danger of placing confidence in an individual.

Puna caparaṃ, bhikkhave, yasmiṃ puggale puggalo abhippasanno hoti, so disāpakkanto hoti. Tassa evaṃ hoti: ‘yo kho myāyaṃ puggalo piyo manāpo so disāpakkanto’ti. Aññe bhikkhū na bhajati. Aññe bhikkhū abhajanto saddhammaṃ na suṇāti. Saddhammaṃ asuṇanto saddhammā parihāyati. Ayaṃ, bhikkhave, tatiyo ādīnavo puggalappasāde.

Furthermore, bhikkhus, that person in which an individual has confidence leaves the region. He thinks thus: 'This person who is dear and charming to us, has left the region'. He does not keep companionship with other fellow bhikkhus. Not keeping companionship with other bhikkhus, he doesn't hear the proper Dhamma. Not hearing the proper Dhamma, he falls away from the proper Dhamma. This, bhikkhus, is the third danger of placing confidence in an individual.

Puna caparaṃ, bhikkhave, yasmiṃ puggale puggalo abhippasanno hoti, so vibbhanto hoti. Tassa evaṃ hoti: ‘yo kho myāyaṃ puggalo piyo manāpo so vibbhanto’ti. Aññe bhikkhū na bhajati. Aññe bhikkhū abhajanto saddhammaṃ na suṇāti. Saddhammaṃ asuṇanto saddhammā parihāyati. Ayaṃ, bhikkhave, catuto ādīnavo puggalappasāde.

Furthermore, bhikkhus, that person in which an individual has confidence has forsaken the order. He thinks thus: 'This person who is dear and charming to us has forsaken the order'. He does not keep companionship with other fellow bhikkhus. Not keeping companionship with other bhikkhus, he doesn't hear the proper Dhamma. Not hearing the proper Dhamma, he falls away from the proper Dhamma. This, bhikkhus, is the fourth danger of placing confidence in an individual.

Puna caparaṃ, bhikkhave, yasmiṃ puggale puggalo abhippasanno hoti, so kālaṅkato hoti. Tassa evaṃ hoti: ‘yo kho myāyaṃ puggalo piyo manāpo so kālaṅkato’ti. Aññe bhikkhū na bhajati. Aññe bhikkhū abhajanto saddhammaṃ na suṇāti. Saddhammaṃ asuṇanto saddhammā parihāyati. Ayaṃ, bhikkhave, pañcamo ādīnavo puggalappasāde. Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ādīnavā puggalappasāde ti.

Furthermore, bhikkhus, that person in which an individual has confidence dies. He thinks thus: 'This person who was dear and charming to us has died'. He does not keep companionship with other fellow bhikkhus. Not keeping companionship with other bhikkhus, he doesn't hear the proper Dhamma.
