I also, bhikkhus, before the sambodhi, when I was a bodhisatta, not a sambuddha, I dwelt abundantly in this same dwelling. Dwelling abundantly in this dwelling, bhikkhus, neither my body was tired nor my eyes; and by absence of clinging, my citta was liberated from the āsavas.

Therefore, bhikkhus, if a bhikkhu wishes: 'may I remain percipient of unloathesomeness in what is loathesome and what is not loathesome', he should thoroughly take to heart this same ānāpānassati-samādhi.

Evaṃ bhāvite kho, bhikkhave, ānāpānassati-samādhimhi evaṃ bahulīkate, sukhaṃ ce vedanaṃ vedayati, 'aniccā·ti pajānāti, 'an-ajjhositā·ti pajānāti, 'an-abhinanditā·ti pajānāti; dukkhaṃ ce vedanaṃ vedayati, 'aniccā·ti pajānāti, 'an-ajjhositā·ti pajānāti, 'an-abhinanditā·ti pajānāti; adukkhamasukhaṃ ce vedanaṃ vedayati, 'aniccā·ti pajānāti, 'an-ajjhositā·ti pajānāti, 'an-abhinanditā·ti pajānāti.

Thus cultivating, bhikkhus, thus developing ānāpānassati-samādhi, when he experiences a sukha vedanā, he understands: 'it is aniccā', he understands: 'it is not grasped at', he understands: 'it is not relished'. When he experiences a dukkha vedanā, he understands: 'it is aniccā', he understands: 'it is not grasped at', he understands: 'it is not relished'. When he experiences an adukkhamasukha vedanā, he understands: 'it is aniccā', he understands: 'it is not grasped at', he understands: 'it is not relished'.

Sukhaṃ ce vedanaṃ vedayati, visaṃyutto naṃ vedayati; dukkhaṃ ce vedanaṃ vedayati, visaṃyutto naṃ vedayati; adukkhamasukhaṃ ce vedanaṃ vedayati, visaṃyutto naṃ vedayati. So kāya-pariyantikaṃ vedanaṃ vedayamāno 'kāya-pariyantikaṃ vedanaṃ vedayāmī·ti pajānāti, jīvita-pariyantikaṃ vedanaṃ vedayamāno 'jīvita-pariyantikaṃ vedanaṃ vedayāmī·ti pajānāti, 'kāyassa bhedā uddhaṃ jīvita-pariyādānā idh·eva sabba-vedayitāni an-abhinanditāni sītī-bhavissantī·ti pajānāti.

When he experiences a sukha vedanā, he experiences it as if separated from it. When he experiences a dukkha vedanā, he experiences it as if separated from it. When he experiences an adukkhamasukha vedanā, he experiences it as if separated from it. When he experiences a vedanā which is limited to the body, he understands: 'I am experiencing a vedanā which is limited to the body'. When he experiences a vedanā which ends with the life, he understands: 'I am experiencing a vedanā which ends with the life'. He understands: 'at the break-up of the body, at the very moment when life ends, all which is experienced here, not being relished, will be appeased'.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, tela·ñca paṭicca, vaṭṭiñca paṭicca tela'p'padīpo jhāyeyya, tass·eva telassa ca vaṭṭiyā ca pariyādānā an-āhāro nibbāyeyya; evam-eva kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāya-pariyantikaṃ vedanaṃ vedayamāno 'kāya-pariyantikaṃ vedanaṃ vedayāmī·ti pajānāti, jīvita-pariyantikaṃ vedanaṃ vedayamāno 'jīvita-pariyantikaṃ vedanaṃ vedayāmī·ti pajānāti, 'kāyassa bhedā uddhaṃ jīvita-pariyādānā idh·eva sabba-vedayitāni an-abhinanditāni sītī-bhavissantī·ti pajānāti·ti.

Just as, bhikkhus, an oil lamp burns by means of the oil and the wick, and as with the ending of the oil and the wick, being without nourishment, it gets extinguished, in the same way, bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu experiences a vedanā which is limited to the body, he understands: 'I am experiencing a vedanā which is limited to the body'. When he experiences a vedanā which ends with the life, he understands: 'I am experiencing a vedanā which ends with the life'. He understands: 'at the break-up of the body, at the very moment when life ends, all which is experienced here, not being relished, will be appeased'.
