evaṃ me sutaṃ:

Thus have I heard:

ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

On one occasion, the Bhagavā was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta grove, the park of d'Anāthapiṇḍika. Then the Bhagavā adressed the bhikkhus:

“sattime, bhikkhave, dhammā upāsakassa vipattiyo saṃvattanti. katame satta? bhikkhudassanaṃ hāpeti, saddhammassavanaṃ pamajjati, adhisīle na sikkhati, appasādabahulo hoti bhikkhūsu theresu ceva navesu ca majjhimesu ca, upārambhacitto dhammaṃ suṇāti randhagavesī, ito bahiddhā dakkhiṇeyyaṃ gavesati, tattha ca pubbakāraṃ karoti. ime kho, bhikkhave, satta dhammā upāsakassa vipattiyo saṃvattanti.

These seven things, bhikkhus, lead to the failure of a lay follower. Which seven? He neglects seeing the bhikkhus, he neglects listening to the correct Dhamma, he doesn't train in heightened virtue, he is very dissatisfied with the bhikkhus, be them Theras, newly ordained or of middle standing, he listens to the Dhamma with an adverse mind, seeking grounds for criticism, he seeks a person worthy of offerings among outsiders, and he gives there first. These, bhikkhus, are the seven things that lead to the failure of a lay follower.

“sattime, bhikkhave, dhammā upāsakassa sampadā saṃvattanti. katame satta? bhikkhudassanaṃ na hāpeti, saddhammassavanaṃ nappamajjati, adhisīle sikkhati, pasādabahulo hoti, bhikkhūsu theresu ceva navesu ca majjhimesu ca anupārambhacitto dhammaṃ suṇāti na randhagavesī, na ito bahiddhā dakkhiṇeyyaṃ gavesati, idha ca pubbakāraṃ karoti. ime kho, bhikkhave, satta dhammā upāsakassa sampadā saṃvattantī”ti.

These seven things, bhikkhus, lead to the success of a lay follower. Which seven? He doesn't neglect seeing the bhikkhus, he doesn't neglect listening to the correct Dhamma, he trains in heightened virtue, he is very satisfied with the bhikkhus, be them Theras, newly ordained or of middle standing, he listens to the Dhamma without an adverse mind, not seeking grounds for criticism, he doesn't seek a person worthy of offerings among outsiders, and he gives here first. These, bhikkhus, are the seven things that lead to the success of a lay follower.
